About

Project Overview

As a thriving community that has seen significant growth over the past several decades, the City of Danbury is prioritizing roadway safety.

The City launched Safe Streets Danbury to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan that will provide recommendations for how to decrease roadway-related fatalities and serious injuries. These recommendations will identify safety deficiencies and improvements throughout the City, with a focus on developing actionable roadway safety improvements and preliminary engineering designs for all modes of transportation.

The Plan is funded through a U.S. Department of Transportation planning grant the City received in December 2023 and administered through the City's Department of Planning and Zoning. To ensure meaningful engagement with local, regional, and statewide stakeholders, an Advisory Committee was established by the City to provide guidance on the Plan's development and to serve as an additional liaison to communities across the City.

The Plan’s final recommendations will be informed by a detailed crash analysis, robust assessments of the existing transportation system, and strong engagement with the members of the public and stakeholders.

The Comprehensive Safety Action Plan will analyze and make recommendations for roadways within the City of Danbury, excluding I-84 and U.S. Route 7.

Vision Zero

Safe Streets Danbury is committed to Vision Zero, a multidisciplinary approach that increases transportation safety by eliminating all roadway-related fatalities and serious injuries.

To achieve this goal, Safe Streets Danbury follows the Federal Highway Administration’s Safe System Approach. This framework acknowledges that while human error is inevitable, transportation systems can be designed to anticipate and mitigate mistakes .

By applying comprehensive, multi-layered strategies to safety, Safe Streets Danbury will help create streets that are safer, more resilient, and better connected.

Schedule

The project will run from October of 2025 to September of 2026.
